Underground electric fences, which are also known as wireless containment systems, are one of the most adopted ways to corner and secure your pet within a particular area. However, these fences are not able to live up to their purpose if the pets are not properly trained by the owners. The pets have to be trained and accustomed to their new boundaries. The underground electric fences come with a transmitter and a collar, which sends a mild shock to your pet whenever it is near the boundary. This collar is also known as the electric fence collar. The training should be conducted in parts, and it must be made sure that the pet has fully understood his current level before moving on to the next. It can be assumed that the training can teach the pets to stay inbounds.
- In order to properly mark the electric fence, use small plastic flags to signify the boundaries.
- Put a leash on your pet. Then, walk with him around the boundaries, which are carefully marked by the flags. Give him a very mild shock when approaching the boundary. This training should be 10 minutes at the most. Afterwards, give your pet a “happy time” after training through either a treat or play time. Of course, if you play with it, make sure that you are both inside the boundaries.
- Put the electric fence collar around the pet’s neck. Do not tighten it too much, though. To know if the collar is tight and loose enough, insert on finger between the collar and your pet. If you still can, then that is good enough.
- Put a leash on your pet, and try walking along the boundaries. Test the collar by getting close to the boundary. You will notice a warning beeps will come from the collar. When this happens, tug on your pet, and run away from the boundary as fast as possible. This kind of session and training must be for 10 minutes every day in a week. After you are done with the training, remove the collar. Even so, do not let your pet wander unsupervised, as the boundaries are still operating.
- There is nothing wrong with giving a “correction shock” to your pet. This will further improve his training. Make him feel better through a treat or a reward.
- Put the collar on our pet. This time, do not walk with it. Let it walk around inside the boundary by itself. If it goes outside of the electric fence, fetch your pet. Then, remove its collar, and place it back to the safe area. Put on his collar again, and compliment it.
- After giving six to seven days of supervised training, try leaving it completely by itself. Continue on with this kind of training in the next three weeks, or until it has mastered moving around on its own.
Every two weeks, remove a flag after the dog has been successful to stay inbounds, even with an electric shock collar on. Eventually, as he progresses, remove all the flags.
This electric fence is so popular today and there are available electric fence kit that are not just available for dog but other animals too like rabbit, deer and many more. Electric horse fencing is also available. This kit does not include an electric fence collar though.
